Google Chrome For Apple Mac Os X

Google's engineers are working steadily on a Mac OS X version of Chrome, its relatively young entry into the browser space dominated by IE on Windows, Safari on the Mac, and Firefox on both. The good news is that implementing Chrome's signature sandboxed processes is a relative snap compared to Windows, or even Linux, due to the BSD roots of Mac OS X's internals.

Google's Chrome browser is most known for its unique approach to security, whereby each tab in the browser is handled by a separate, sandboxed process. In addition to providing additional protection against one problematic webpage or Web app taking the entire browser down, it provides the most secure browsing currently available on any platform. The sandbox effectively prevents a malicious webpage from accessing the rest of the system.

On Windows, Google had to effectively engineer its own sandboxing facilities. 'On Windows, getting a process sandboxed in a way that's useful to us is a pretty complicated affair,' wrote Chromium engineer Jeremy Moskovich is a recent blog post. The solution represents tons of source code spread across 100 individual files. On Linux the situation is a little better, as several distros offer sandboxing APIs. But not all use the same APIs, presenting its own challenges.

Mac OS X, on the other hand, has a straightforward sandboxing API built into Darwin, the BSD-based, open source foundation that Mac OS X is built on. Each page rendering process is essentially set up with the resources it will need to complete its tasks and then locked down with a call to sandbox_init(). Sandboxed processes on Mac OS X retain access to resources they have open at the time of the call to sandbox_init(), but are otherwise locked down tight. 'That means no network access, and very limited or no access to files and Mach ports,' according to Moskovich.

Google Chrome for Mac OS X isn't yet ready for release, but the team is still hard at work on putting it together. The easy integration of sandboxing on the platform removes the hurdle of porting all the complex Windows code. 'It's important to us that the Mac port of Chromium feels and performs like a native Mac application, and that it provides the kind of high-quality experience Mac users expect,' wrote Moskovich. We're looking forward to putting Chrome through its paces once it's ready for mass consumption.
